Marcus Hollands recently finished his undergrad in graphic design, we wrote about him a short time ago, and then he started to contribute to FISK by posting about design students in Australia. Now Marcus has founded Styles clothing out of Brisbane, Australia. His t-shirt designs are fun and fresh. I want that Cool Banana shirt!!

The CalArts Public Affairs design office has just launched a new website that documents the REDCAT poster series designed and printed by students in the Graphic Design Workshop from 2005 through the present.

More than 175 posters have been produced so far, so we thought it was about time the series got the documentation it deserves.

A disclaimer: While we’ve done our best to provide the most accurate information possible, our records are incomplete and we can’t identify who some of the designers were. If you can provide any of the missing information, or see errors that need to be corrected, please contact us (at jprichard@calarts.edu) and we’ll update the site. If you happen to have a poster that doesn’t appear on the site, please let us know and we’ll add it to the archive. Our goal is to provide the most complete documentation possible, and to do that we’ll need your help.

We should have posted about this a lot earlier but we were too busy making zines for the first annual LA Zine Fest. We were there with No Girls Allowed Records and Sarah Heysel on Sunday from 11am-5pm. It was a huge turnout and super inspiring to see that many creative people into small publishing and printed matter. We met tons of cool people and got enough cool zines for the rest of the year. We will also be at Shelf Life 2 next month at USC.

Friends of Graphic Design is a student design group coming from the Portland State University (Lis Charman MFA CalArts chairs) design program. They are a great example of students coming together to make shit happen. Go check out their blog to see what they’ve been up to.

Finite and Infinite Games showcases the products (finite) and process (infinite) that constitute graphic design’s engagement with the world. To this end, the show’s week-long installation will frame five informal events, transforming the gallery through a modular exhibition design that encourages visitor participation and highlights graphic design’s role as a mediator of cultural experience.

Finite and Infinite Games is the year-end show for the CalArts MFA Graphic Design Program. It represents the work of Noura Al-Naggar, Scott Barry, Tim Belonax, Laura Bernstein, Nate Blowers, Ania Diakoff, Amanda Gartman, Sarah Gottesdiener, Mary Kim Harmon, Eileen Hsu, Pouya Jahanshahi, Kate Johnston, David Karwan, Tom Kracauer, Catherine Lee, Thea Lorentzen, Scott Massey, Julie Moon, Danae Moore, Masato Nakada, Jesse Lee Stout, Tara Tannenbaum, and Ben Woodlock.

The opening is tomorrow, Thursday, May 12 at 7:00PM. They also have special events happening from opening night into early next week (see the website linked above for more details). Hope to see you all there!
