End of Summer/Beginning of School

It’s the end of summer for a lot of design students (we start next week here at CalArts), some of you may have already started classes. Either way, everyone should have some more time on their hands than usual. The early weeks of the semester are usually pretty light so take advantage of that. First off, if you don’t have a website than that should be your priority. There is no excuse for not having your work online, there are dozens of ways to do this and a lot of them are free. Why have your work online? Well it leads to good things, most studios searching for interns will expect to see a portfolio. So if you didn’t get an internship this summer that will definitely give you an advantage next summer. It’s also a great way to get your name out there. If you already have a website then spend your free time making a promotional piece for yourself. If you can’t screen print or use alternative printing, getting postcards made online is super cheap.

Go make something!

Lila Burns

Lila Burns is interning at Modern Dog in Seattle and is about to enter her last year in the graphic design program at CalArts. She’s already had three years of awesome stuff that I can’t wait to see what she makes her fourth year. I decided to post the video above because I really enjoy her enthusiasm about making work/stuff. With that said, you have to go look at her portfolio of amazing work. Her work covers a wide range of styles (handmade and vector) and mediums (motion, illustration, screen printed posters, etc).

She also plays ukelele and writes a lot of songs.

Tim Belonax

Tim Belonax is about to start his second year in the MFA graphic design program at CalArts. This summer he created a micro site displaying what he was up to during his first year. Tim has a wide range of work and styles going on his portfolio. He also has some really amazing printing skills (I’ve seen it in person). Love the polka dot apron.

Scott Massey

Scott Massey is a design student in the MFA program at CalArts and founder of the RRR Project. He is one of the most raw image makers I’ve seen – his collages are beautiful. He just had a ton of work published in Mike Perry’s new book, Pulled, which I would recommend picking up. Go check out his website, there is lots of good stuff to look at – also download a free copy of RRR.003!

Florence Bamberger

Florence Bamberger is a graphic design/illustrator from Paris. She just finished her MA in graphic design and art direction at ESAG Panninghen. She did her BA at Central Saint Martins in graphic design. She has a very specific illustration style which is very fluid, colorful, and full of life. Out of all of her pieces I was most drawn to her most typographic project, ‘Pleats Please.’

Here is her description on the project: (slideshow above)
Personal project about the theme of the copy. Research on how to translate the Pleats Please concept by the fashion designer Issy Miake into typography. From creating a Pleats Please alphabet, I then imagine words like pieces of fabrics that once out of their box look like clothes being worn.

PR

What is PR? It’s the alias of the graphic design practice of Pierre Nguyen, a third year in the graphic design program at CalArts. He recently finished putting up his portfolio where he documents all of his student work at CalArts very carefully. He is also the master of patterns, slide show above.
